Attendance Policy
Attendance Policy
Expectations
Attendance every day is required for students’ academic success. Perfect attendance is the goal. Having 90% attendance means a student is missing 18+ days over a school year—a month of instruction. With regular attendance, students learn the skills and habits to succeed in their academic and social lives.
NY State regulations require schools to maintain records that verify student attendance. Attendance must be recorded daily. Late arrivals and early departures must also be recorded.
Absences
It is the family’s responsibility to contact the teacher before 8:00a.m. to inform the school of the reason for any absence.
When a student returns from an absence, he/she must submit a note or documentation for the absence to his/her classroom teacher. A record of the absence (excused or not) will be made. In order to properly code the absences, after three consecutive days, parents MUST provide a doctors note.
NYC Public School Discipline Code
The Citywide Behavioral Expectations to Support Student Learning, also known as the Discipline Code, is a guide that covers infractions and the range of possible disciplinary and other responses for grades K-5 and 6-12 in addition to the steps on how students/families can appeal decisions. This document also includes the Student's Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.
Please review the Discipline Code with your child. Please note the process is an escalation process where the first infraction of any kind warrants one of the lower end consequences that we have available and with repeat infractions becomes more punitive.
We need your partnership in enforcing school rules and socially acceptable standards with language and actions.

The P.S. 60 Woodhaven School
Cell phone/Electronic Policy
At P.S. 60, we are committed to creating a focused, engaging, and supportive learning environment where all students can thrive. As part of this commitment, we are implementing NYC Public Schools’ new citywide policy on cell phones and electronic devices.
What You Need to Know:
- All NYC public schools are required to have a policy that prohibits student use of personal internet-enabled devices during the school day and on school grounds.
- Students may still bring cell phones and other internet-enabled devices to school but cannot use them during the school day.
- Students must turn their devices off at the beginning of the school day, and said devices will be collected by their teachers first thing in the morning. They will be returned to the students prior to dismissal.
- If a student is observed using a cell phone or personal device during school hours, it will be confiscated and given to administration. Confiscated devices will only be returned to a parent or guardian at the end of the school day.
- School-issued laptops or tablets are permitted to be used throughout the school day.
Devices covered by this policy include, but are not limited to:
- Smartphones
- Smart watches
- Personal tablets/laptops
Secure Storage: In compliance with Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, P.S. 60 will provide secure storage for personal devices during the school day. This includes designated closets in each classroom with locks. Students will retrieve their phones at the time of dismissal from their individual classroom teachers.
Lost or Damaged Devices: Please note that P.S. 60 is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices. Devices are brought to school at the owner’s risk.
Policy Violations: Students who use a device without an approved exception will not be suspended, but the school will take progressive disciplinary steps as outlined in the Discipline Code.
Communication During the School Day: In case of an emergency, families can contact students during the school day by reaching out to our main office at (718) 441-5046. The school will also promptly contact you if any concerns arise related to your child throughout the school day. Parents may also contact Ms. Maria Cardona, our Parent Coordinator, at the following phone number: (347) 563-4290. Ms. Cardona and individual classroom teachers also send out messages via the Remind app; please make sure to sign up for said application with Ms. Cardona and your child’s teacher(s).
If required, families needing exceptions to this policy due to IEPs, 504 plans, medical conditions, caregiving responsibilities, or translation needs may submit a request to the school-based designee for review.
This policy was developed to support a safe and an effective learning environment.
Please refer to the P.S. 60 website for additional information and updates.
